A new storefront for empanadas is coming to Queen West

Delicious, to-go food has become a pandemic lifesaver -- for hungry customers and reimagined restaurants alike. For anyone navigating Queen West, the options are about to get even tastier with the imminent opening of Super Empanada.

Owned by the team behind popular Argentine-inspired spot Tanto, Super Empanada is also housed at the front of Tanto’s newest space at 922 Queen Street West. With a reputation built on wood-fired meats, and meals that mix Argentine and European influences, Tanto has continued to shine even in pandemic times.

With Super Empanada, chef and partner Julian Iliopoulos hopes to bring some casual, takeout fare to Queen Street’s pedestrian traffic. “After working through the recipes the last number of years at Tanto, I feel they are ready to take the centre stage,” says Iliopoulos. “Everything is made from scratch,” he adds, “empanadas rolled and folded by hand each day.”

The concise menu features several flavours -- some traditional, some modern -- of savoury empanadas, including spicy beef, caprese and provoleta and mushroom. Drinks and a short menu of portable desserts, including flan and piña colada tres leches, will also be on offer.

Super Empanada is planning a soft opening for this Friday at 4 p.m. Once up and running, food will also be available for pre-order takeout and delivery through their website, Tock, DoorDash and Ritual.
