'S.W.A.T' actor Rod Perry dead at 86


S.W.A.T. star Rod Perry has died, aged 86.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor passed away on 17 December (20), but his loved ones have only now shared the news of his loss, although they have not disclosed a cause of death.

A U.S. Army veteran, the Pennsylvania native began his career in the spotlight as a model, before turning to acting, appearing on Broadway in a production of the musical Leonard Sillman’s New Faces of 1968.

He rose to prominence in the 1974 TV movie The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, starring opposite Cicely Tyson, and played Sergeant David ‘Deacon’ Kay in the original S.W.A.T. crime drama series.

The show only lasted for two seasons, but Perry returned to the franchise for the 2003 movie adaptation, appearing as the father of rapper/actor LL Cool J’s character, Officer Deacon ‘Deke’ Kay.

Perry also led the casts of 1970s movies The Black Godfather and The Black Gestapo, while his other onscreen credits included TV shows Barney Miller, Good Times, Project U.F.O., and Babylon 5.
